9 Reasons Your Supermarket Application Gets Rejected

Availability is the first filter, and it is automatic

Nearly every supermarket application starts with an availability grid, and it is scored before anything else. Blocking out weekend evenings or early mornings will end most applications immediately, because those are precisely the shifts being recruited for.

Be honest, but be strategic about how you present it. If you can only work three days, mark those three days as fully open rather than marking every day as partly open. Systems reward blocks of continuous availability, not scattered hours.

A second, less obvious trap: applying to a store that is not on a realistic route for you. Recruiters check the distance and reject applications where the commute looks unsustainable for a minimum-wage role, because early leavers cost them money.

If your availability genuinely is narrow, target the shifts nobody else wants — 5am replenishment, night stock, Sunday afternoons. Competition there is a fraction of what it is for weekday daytime hours.
