4-Week Plan to Land a UK Delivery Driver Job With No Experience
Week 3: Apply to Courier Delivery Service Partners and Fleet Operators
Securing a delivery driver position quickly depends on targeting the appropriate hiring structure: employed PAYE fleet driving or self-employed Delivery Service Partner (DSP) sub-contracting. Both pathways regularly accept candidates without previous delivery experience, but they operate under completely different pay frameworks and contractual terms.
Employed PAYE driver positions—offered directly by supermarket fleets (such as Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda, and Ocado), Royal Mail, and select express carriers—pay hourly rates typically ranging from £11.44 to £14.50 per hour, with premium overtime rates reaching £16.00 to £18.50 per hour. Under this model, the company provides the liveried van, commercial fleet insurance, fuel cards, uniform, and statutory pension and holiday entitlements. Shifts are typically structured on 4-on-4-off rotas or set weekly schedules covering morning (06:00–14:00) or twilight (14:00–22:00) delivery windows.
Self-employed DSP and courier franchise models (common across major parcel networks like DPD, Evri, Yodel, and Amazon logistics hubs) offer fixed day rates between £120 and £180 per day, with seasonal route performance bonuses. In this arrangement, you operate as an independent sole trader. You either provide your own commercial van or hire one directly from the DSP fleet pool (typical hire costs run between £180 and £230 per week, deducted directly from your gross invoiced pay). Goods in Transit and Hire & Reward (H&R) commercial courier insurance are either arranged via the DSP group policy or self-funded.
During Week 3, submit targeted applications across both channels. Target delivery stations and logistics parks within a 45-minute commute of your home. When completing application forms, highlight physical stamina, familiarity with local road networks, a clean driving record, and availability for weekend or bank holiday rotas, which hiring managers prioritise above past delivery tenure.
Submitting multiple applications in Week 3 typically yields interview invitations and assessment dates within 3 to 7 business days, leading into your final onboarding evaluation.
